Moana: The New Disney Princess

Debora Cortes, Staff Writer

On November 23, from the creators of Frozen and Zootopia, Disney brings us Moana.

Moana is a teenage Pacific Islander on a mission to save her people with a demigod named Maui. Moana has been great friends with the ocean ever since she was a young  girl. On her quest to save the world she gets help from the ocean.

Moana and Maui go through several challenges to her people. The first out of many challenges they go on was to defeat the Kakamora. The Kakamora are evil coconut islanders.

Even though we don’t know much about the movie so far, many people are excited about the first Hawaiian princess. However, some people upset about Maui’s size and the way Polynesian men are depicted.

“When we look at photos of Polynesian men & women from the last 100-200 years, most of our people were not overweight and this negative stereotype of Maui is just not acceptable – No thanks to Disney,” Jenny Salesa, who is of Tongan heritage wrote about her feelings towards Maui’s size on Facebook.

Besides all these remarks, Moana is a prefect motion picture movie for the whole family to watch. Check out in theaters on Thanksgiving day.
