The State of the Union Address is a speech from the President to Congress about the president’s reflections on their accomplishments and plans for the future. The president can also talk about other things that are happening in the country. The speech tends to take place on a Tuesday and in the Capitol Building. This year being no exception, President Donald Trump entered the chamber at around 9 Pm (6 PM on the West Coast) on the 30th of January to address the State of the Union.

He started off by restating his mission which is to try to accomplish what every American person wants. He went on to talk about the hardships endured by the country, pointing out members in the crowd who had experienced them or helped people who had experienced them.

We heard tales of Americans like Coast Guard Petty Officer Ashlee Leppert, who is here tonight in the gallery with Melania. Ashlee was aboard one of the first helicopters on the scene in Houston during Hurricane Harvey. Through 18 hours of wind and rain, Ashlee braved live power lines and deep water, to help save more than 40 lives. Thank you, Ashlee.”

He also recognized firefighters and people who were affected by hurricanes.

After doing his best to inspire the crowd, he turned to accomplishments. According to CNN, “Trump’s speech was 80% celebration of what he has done and 20% talking about what he would like to do.”

President Trump stated that 2.4 million jobs had been created since he was named president elect and the rate of unemployment was as low as it has been in 45 years. In addition, he said wages were rising and assured that the stock market was doing well. He also went into specifics about the tax bill passed by Congress that he says included “the biggest tax cuts and reforms in American history.”

Later, he went back to pointing out people in the audience with inspiring stories such as a boy named Preston Sharp, who he said had started a movement to place 40,000 flags on veterans graves on Veterans Day.

To start off and attempt his points on immigration, President Trump brought up the parents of two girls who were murdered walking home by members of MS-13 (a gang whose majority of members are Central American). He used this story to show that the “loopholes” in the immigration system had to be closed. “We have proposed new legislation that will fix our immigration laws, and support our ICE and Border Patrol Agents, so that this cannot ever happen again.”

His “pillars” to immigration (policies) were to allow dreamers to achieve citizenship, build the wall, end the visa lottery, and end chain migration.

The visa lottery is a program that offers a “chance for anyone from qualifying countries to get their green card. The DV lottery is designed to ensure plenty of diversity in US immigration, so only individuals from countries underrepresented in US immigration are usually allowed to apply,” according to us-immigration.com. President Trump says that our immigration system should rather be based on usefulness to the country.

Chain migration is a law that allows immigrants to bring their family to the U.S. too. “Under the current broken system, a single immigrant can bring in virtually unlimited numbers of distant relatives. Under our plan, we focus on the immediate family by limiting sponsorships to spouses and minor children.” Of course this would also mean that an immigrant couldn’t bring their parents with them.

The speech was ended with, “As long as we are proud of who we are, and what we are fighting for, there is nothing we cannot achieve. As long as we have confidence in our values, faith in our citizens, and trust in our God, we will not fail. Our families will thrive. Our people will prosper. And our Nation will forever be safe and strong and proud and mighty and free. Thank you, and God bless America.”

President Trump’s first State of the Union was the third longest in history. What promises will he keep?
