Parents have always been our base, guiding us through life, and looking over our shoulder. They are there when we need them most and tolerate us when we couldn’t care less. Sometimes you don’t remember to say thank you for everything they do for you, but they continue to love you and support you. But imagine if your mom or dad was a teacher, or more specifically your teacher? You may think that would be super annoying, and it sometimes can be.

Parents have a habit of embarrassing you in front of your friends. They make comments like, “I remember when you would wet the bed every night ” or “yeah joe used to stand on his toes and yell about muffins.” They tell stories about you that you wished other people wouldn’t know.

With a parent as your teacher, and them being the teacher of your friends and about 200 other students a year, this can become a whole new level of embarrassing. Instead of them retelling your more shameful experiences with only a close knit group, they tell it to the entirety of the student body.

One specific awkward situation was when my father, more commonly known as Mr. Seiple, decided to share a rather embarrassing video of me as a buck-toothed 8 year old with his students. I was asking a non-existent audience how they would feel if they were struck with an giant branch during a hale storm. I can tell you right now it is not a flattering video.

Sometimes they might use the excuse for this that it was for an example in class.

This doesn’t make it any more comfortable.

Another joy that parent teachers have? Walking into your quiet classroom one sunny afternoon and announcing as loudly as they can “Maria don’t forget, Daddy loves you!” From personal experience, I can say that this is not a fun experience, unless of course you’re not the person everyone is laughing at.

And what about people you’ve never seen in your live saying, “Are you Cole? I’ve heard so much about you!” or “Aren’t you Mr. Seiple’s daughter? Yeah, he was an awful teacher!” nothing says privacy like strangers coming up to you and judging your parents.

Alright, we’re done being negative. Here’s the positives:

Teacher parents keep you on track. When you really feel like procrastinating, your parent steps in and makes you do your homework. They also give you a heads up on upcoming projects from their own class. They tend to try and help you with your homework to the best of their knowledge because they know it is important. If both of you are unable to solve or answer something, chances are they have contacts for other teachers that can help. For example, when I’m unable to solve a math problem, my mom can send a text to a math teacher at her school.

In addition, teacher parents always want you to do your best and push you to go into highly advanced careers. Of course, with this comes high expectations. Anything below an A and you have to go talk to your teacher about how you can improve.  Teacher- parents also have a habit of preconditioning you so when ever you get in trouble, even for something super dumb, you freak out. If you talk over the teacher in class, you have to go apologize the next day. Hmmm. These are just more negatives aren’t they.

Well one real positive is the fact that when you need to talk about something from school, they listen. They know exactly what to say because they have seen it before. They are always there for you during your times of need, and help you out with your problems.

In all, there are many aspects to having a teacher as a parent, some negatives, and of course some positives too.
