March 20, 2018, Austin Wyatt Rollins, a 17-year-old student, shot two other students at Great Mills High School in Maryland. The two students, 16-year-old Jaelynn Willey, was shot in the head, and a fourteen-year-old Desmond Barnes in the leg. A legally obtained handgun, owned by Rollins’ father was used in the shooting.

According to police, the reason for the shooting was not random, the shooter had a “prior relationship which recently ended”.

The handgun used, was a handgun owned by Rollins’ father, the teen disregarded the safety on the gun, and proceeded to shoot and kill Willey and injure Desmond Barnes.

Austin Rollins, had later shot himself in the head confirmed police, after some confusion of whether or not the shot fired by the police was what killed the teen arose.

The reason for the attack was assumed to be of a break-up between Rollins and Jaelynn Willey.

Joshua Patapoff, an eighth grader at Dana replied, “ As sad as it is [experiencing a breakup] you should see help instead of taking a life.”

Another eighth grade student, Emily Rodriguez, said,” The whole tragedy is idiotic and egotistical on his part.”

This is the 17th shooting since 2018 began, and from this shooting many people became aware of how difficult, and potentially dangerous it could be to break up with someone with access to a gun.
