You know him for his music, his iconic wife, his fashion, but now you’ll know him for some of the recent controversial things he has said.

Kanye West, American rapper, tweeted support towards President Donald Trump on April 25, 2018, and since then has sparked controversy.

First, he tweeted how Trump was his “brother” and how he can have his own independent thoughts. Shortly after, he tweeted a picture of his signed “Make America Great Again” hat.

Kanye’s disputable tweets have gotten the attention of many people, including celebrities such as John Legend, Chance the Rapper, and more.

Both Kanye West and his wife Kim Kardashian are friends with John Legend. When John Legend saw what he tweeted and learned more about his views, he tried to privately text West. The texts were made public, and you can read what Legend said here:

Many celebrities and people in general had turned against Kanye West, who was showing his support from Trump even after some of Trump’s comments considered racist by many. Chance the Rapper supported Kanye and his “free thinking”, tweeting “Talked to him two days ago. He’s in a great space and not affected by folk tryna question his mental or physical health.” The same day he also tweeted that “Black people don’t have to be democrats.”

As this controversy continued to unfold, Kanye West’s wife, Kim Kardashian West tweeted a series of tweets responding to people commenting on Kanye’s mental state because of what he was saying.

Soon after the tweets of April 25, 3 days later, Kanye released a song called “Ye vs The People” featuring T.I. as the “people”, meaning people questioning and not supporting him and his way of thinking. This political rap goes back and forth between Kanye West and T.I.  

When featured on an entertainment site, TMZ, Kanye West suggested the idea that slavery was a choice. “When you hear about slavery for 400 years. For 400 years?! That sounds like a choice,” Kanye said, on May 1, 2018. Van Lathan from TMZ responded, and it went viral. Lathan claimed to feel he needed to confront West. Kanye West had turned around to ask the others in the room, “Do you feel like I’m thinking free and feeling free?” Lathan shot back “I actually don’t think you’re thinking anything,” and continued to respond to what Kanye had been saying.

According to a poll from HuffPost and YouGov, Republicans’ support for West increased, while Democrats’ support for West decreased. Already, someone as famous as Kanye West has started to influence his following.
