The Korean Wave also known as “Hallyu,” refers to the rapid growth of Korean culture in many countries around the globe. Hallyu’s prime source of popularity is Korean Pop. The Korean Wave has been around since the 1990’s, but not until recently Kpop has reached a new level of fame.

Korean Pop has played a major role in the Korean economy. Tourism, specifically, brings money to their economy. The Korean wave brought an estimate of 11.6 billion US dollars that boosted their economy in 2014. For example, Do Jong Hwan, head of South Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and tourism said “When Psy was active, the economic effect amounted up to about 1 trillion won (~$896 million). I predict that BTS will easily surpass 1 trillion won.” BTS is a South Korean boy band, gaining lots of attention around the world at the moment. Hallyu has also attracted about 17.2 million foreigners to the tourism industry. Foreigners go to Korea to see bands like EXO, BTS, Twice, Blackpink and NCT.

K-pop has demolished many records. Korean idols have been on the Billboard chart multiple times. ‘Nobody’ by Wonder Girls was the first kpop song to hit the Billboard hot 100 chart in October 31, 2009. ‘The War: The 4th album’ by EXO reached the Billboard 200 on August 5th 2017. NCT was the First K-Pop Act to Hit No. 1 on the Emerging Artists Chart in January 28, 2017, impressive right? After selling 185,000 albums in the U.S. within the first week of release, BTS’ ‘Love Yourself: Answer’ Becomes First K-Pop Album to Hit No. 1 on Billboard 200 Chart.

During the ending ceremony at PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games, two of the most popular faces of kpop performed. EXO, who also contributed to the Hallyu wave, sang their big hit ‘Growl’ and ‘Power’. CL, a former member of Korea’s beloved band 2NE1 sang ‘HELLO B+*** ’ and ‘I am the best.’ This sent many foreigners with questions about k-pop

Hallyu has helped spread their culture around the world. Many people have taken a interest on the artists and how they became to be. Korean Pop has become a global sensation because of the Korean Wave.

Why should I be interested in K-Pop, and why should others be interested in trying it?
