It was discovered in August that the more you breathe in polluted air, the less intelligent you’ll be. Pollution had always caused health problems, but now it’s impacting many people. But recent studies show that pollution is actually causing a big reduction in people’s intelligence. The more that this dirty air was inhaled, the less intelligent you’ll be.

Researchers at the IFPRI (International Food Policy Research Institute) examined some data from the National China Family Panel Studies longitudinal survey. They had mapped cognitive test scores, of both verbal and math, of about 32,000 ages 10 and over between the years of 2010 to 2014. The researchers have found out that the math scores that these people had taken have “decreased with increasing cumulative air pollution exposure,” meaning that ever since the air had gotten more polluted and smog filled, the more that the air had gotten worse.

While this study adds to the many health hazards regarding air pollution, it will be a concern to many cities and countries.

Some people who are wealthy enough are designing their homes and buying appliances to filter out pollutants in their air and water, while other residents who don’t have enough money are stuck breathing in this air. Not only does that affect their health, but from the recent studies, their cognitive abilities.

Cognitive abilities are brain-based skills that we need to carry out any tasks from the easiest to the most hardest. Since pollution can directly affect the brain, it will also affect the cognitive performances.
