All over the world teens listen to music, the most popular being Rap, Hip Hop, or Pop. Have you ever wondered what the song lyrics are expressing or actually saying to its listeners? Most of the lyrics have explicit words, and at some points express a sort of sexual meaning. Even though that song is catchy and has a great vibe, the lyrics mean something different, if you know what I mean. Given these facts, take a moment to think about what song’s like these do to a teenagers mind. That’s right, music like this persuades them into doing something that they should not be doing.
Some music videos and lyrics are bad and can affect the mindset of teens. Those examples are encouraging us to say bad words, do drugs, to smoke, or vape. Artists also talk about sexual behavior. Some rappers who are notorious for performing suggestive lyrics are Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, and Post Malone. There are so many sexual songs. Some examples are God Is A Women and Side to Side, by Ariana Grande.
Vox ATL states, “Teens like to keep up with the latest trends to stay relevant and in the moment. But as teens, we often get so entangled in the drama of our daily lives, we don’t really take the time to analyze how this music, and its underlying messages, affect our thinking.”
According to The Child Refuge organization, “Though music videos are particularly entertaining especially for those who love music in general, too much exposure to it can lead to negative effects. Statistically speaking, children and teens are the most vulnerable to those effects. The younger members of the population are the ones who spend the most time in watching music videos.”
But, it is not just music that affects the mindset of teens, it is also sexual movies too. I know I have had to cover my eyes once or twice in a movie that I really liked, Twilight especially. With this, there are some movies that I know for a fact that most teenagers have watched.
Some examples of these movies are the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogies and Mean Girls. With this being said, there are for sure parts that teens should not be watching even if they are rated PG 13.
In the end, sexual movies and music videos affect the mindset of teenagers drastically. So, next time when you are watching a music video, listening to a song, or watching a movie, think about what you are watching or listening to. Question yourself and ask “is this appropriate to be watching?” If you are pressured into thinking this situation by andolder cousin, or close friend, some advice would be to be courageous enough to not listen to them and do what you think is right. Know your boundaries and do what you think is right.
