According to Wall Street Journal, Disney has agreed to redraw Princess Tiana, Disney’s first and only black princess, after lightening her skin and changing her facial features in the new movie Wreck-It-Ralph 2 Ralph Breaks the Internet.

According to Orlando Sentinel, “The differences might seem subtle to a person unfamiliar with the nuanced subject of colorism with the black community. But the changes didn’t go unnoticed by several observers who voiced their complaints on social media.”

Over the summer, fans of  Princess Tiana, the 2009’s Princess and the Frog star, quickly noticed her appearance changed in the Wreck-It Ralph 2 teasers.  The “new” Tiana didn’t look a thing like the original, hand-drawn design. She had lighter skin and hair and was remodeled with sharper features. This led to a rally on social media, as fans of Princess Tiana spoke out against the very obvious changes to the character’s design.

The other princesses received CGI redesigns (special visual effects created using computer software). Some people also criticized Disney for depicting a lighter version of Pocahontas.

Tiana’s voice actress, Anika Noni Rose, also raised concerns. She spoke out on Instagram for the first time since the reveal of the lighter skinned Tiana, revealing that she and the original animation team behind The Princess and the Frog, met with Disney’s animation studios after the reveal of the lighter-skinned Tiana.

“I was able to express how important it is to little girls (and let’s face it, grown women) who felt represented by her that her skin tone stay as rich as it had been and that her nose continues to be the little round nose that Mark so beautifully rendered in the movie,” wrote Rose. “The same nose on my very own face and on many other little brown faces around the world, that we so rarely get to see in fantasy.”

8th grader Savannah Garrit says, “I think it is such a big deal because people, the princess was made a certain way and should stay that way. I think some people might think they have to change something about them to make it ‘better’”.

When producing The Princess and the Frog, Rose says that the animation team (lead by Mark Henn), made sure to incorporate certain aspects of Rose’s likeness into the character. Most importantly her deeper skin tone, her rounded nose, her full lips, and the fact that she was left-handed.

When Rose and the team met with the animations studios, the animators told her that the CGI did certain things to the lighting, which might have caused Tiana’s appearance to alter. Rose made it clear keeping Tiana’s original appearance was an important part of the movie.

How does this matter I am a black kid and I frankly don’t care plus how dark skinned does she have to be

As an African American myself I personally think they didn’t mean to make her appearance light-skinned. As it says in the article it’s the lighting that makes her appearance, the only mistake was her facial features.
