STEAM 8th grader Grant Granucci says “I feel like the movie will be different than the book because that’s normally what happens, I also know that the actors and actresses will look obviously look different than what everyone has already pictured in their mind and sometimes that bothers people, even though you can’t use the people you have imagined.”

Angie Thomas’ novel melds social justice and teenage fears in ways most films dream of capturing. The Hate U Give is about a 16 year old girl named Star that is constantly switching between two worlds: the poor, mostly black neighborhood, where she lives and the prep, mostly white school she attends. Her uneasy balance between these two worlds shatters when she witnesses the fatal shooting from a police office, involving her childhood best friend Khalil. Now Star is facing pressure from all sides of her community and she must find her voice, and stand up for what is right.

The day before the film’s release, screenwriter Audrey Wells died from cancer at the age of 58. 20th Century Fox released a statement saying “We are simply heartbroken. Audrey’s was a voice of empowerment and courage, and her words will live on through the strong, determined female characters she brought to life. Our thoughts are with Brian, Tatiana, and all of Audrey’s family and friends at this difficult time.”
