Some shipping containers in San Pedro, located under the Vincent Thomas Bridge, exploded on the night of October 30th at around 6:00. No injuries were reported from the blast. The blast was reported just before 6 p.m. in the 100th block of South Ferry Street, according to Amy Batman of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The container that exploded was due to be transported and was one of the eight or ten transporting scrap metal. A bomb squad was sent in to make sure there wasn’t any more additional damage. The port then evacuated over 100 people, including truckers.

A hazmat squad from the Port police and the LAFD was summoned to the scene, along with the bomb squad from the Los Angeles Police Department. There were also some officials with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection that were called to the scene.

Investigators called the incident an “industrial accident”. An industrial accident is (according to the law) a sudden and unforeseen event, attributable to any cause, which happens to a person, arising out of or in the course of his or her work, causing loss of life or injury, property damage, social and economic disruption or environmental degradation. According to some sources the scrap metal in the containers contained some chemicals and some other agents that could have possibly led to the explosion.

Although it was quite a dangerous incident causing the container to rip apart from the explosion, also making metal fly hundreds of yards away, there were no injuries. Generally, this explosion was a small industrial accident that caused some delays in the port’s work but no one was hurt, which is always very good.
