Transgender people; people who don’t live by society’s standards are often criticized or discriminated for their actions. Those who are considered “different” are mistreated just because they don’t follow the norms of society.

An NPR article was published describing an incident that happened recently. A text from the article reads, “A memo that has reportedly been circulating at the Department of Health and Human Services aims to narrow the federal government’s definition of “sex” under Title IX — a change that could leave transgender people without a number of the legal protections that have become standard in recent years.” This shows that the Department of Health and Humans Services is starting to deprive transgender people of most legal protections that other people normally have. Protesters responded to this by gathering in NYC’s Washington Square and in front of the White House holding signs saying the message, “We will not be erased.”

At the White House on Monday, October 19, President Trump was asked about his earlier promise to protect transgender Americans and others in the LGBTQ community. He responded with, “We’re looking at it,—We have a lot of different concepts right now. They have a lot of different things happening with respect to transgender right now.” “I’m protecting everybody,” he added. “I want to protect our country.” But does he mean with what he says?

According to Trump administration statement administration already has taken steps to try to disqualify most transgender people from serving in the military. 7th-grade student Marissa Salvador responds to this incident with, “I find it dumb that transgender people or anyone in LGBTQ to not get the same rights as others.”

In general, transgender people or LGBTQ, in general, are often mistreated and are looked down upon by society. 7th grader Bonnie Campbell responds to this statement with, “I feel bad because they want to be themselves and others don’t except that.”
