Defy Media, a company that has been around for around 22 years and has entertained a big platform, has shut down?

Defy media was an american digital media company that produced online content for the 12-34 age group. This media was originally found in 1996 ‘Alloy Online’. (later turned to Alloy Digital) The final company was formed in 2013 with Break Media.

On November 6, 2018 Defy media announced that they were “ceasing operations” which means that they are discontinuing their activity. Despite their claim of ‘marketing conditions’ being the cause of the shut down, numerous former employees blamed ‘poor financial practices.’

At one point the company claimed to have around 400 employees but never seemed to confirm the headcount. The headcount has shrunk in recent months as it pared back the business in the hopes of staying afloat. (out of difficulty)

Defy media owned and operated online brands such as, Smosh, Shut Up! Cartoons, Smosh games, Clevver media, and more.

“Regretfully, Defy Media has ceased operations. We are extremely proud of what we have accomplished here at Defy and here and in particular want to thank all the employees who worked here. We deeply regret the impact that this has had on them today. Unfortunately market conditions got in the way of us completing our mission.” Defy media said to let people know that they were sorry.

Defy media shutting down will affect many people because a lot of them get entertained by these websites.

“Personally, I’m not really affected by this because I don’t really get entertained by it. But I know that the people that do, are sad because what will they do now?” says Noelia Suarez, a  seventh grader here at Dana stating her opinion on the topic.

Defy media has been around for awhile now and has, sadly shut down. We are not sure if it is going to be shut down forever but we hope that it will come back.
