Virtual Reality Sets: Are They Worth It?

Nikko Doughty, Sports Editor

Over time, video games have gotten more realistic and even to the point where people have made systems called virtual reality. Virtual reality (or VR) is….There are lots of VR gaming systems out in the world, but here are the pros and cons of the HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and  PlayStation VR sets

Playstation VR

Pros & cons

Pro: Price by itself is $171 but that is not including motion controllers and a camera which is necessary. For this system to function, the camera and controller prices combined is about $150, but you can pay $100 extra to get the camera and the move controllers for less.

Pro: White and sleek with an adjustable one-piece back. It has big foam pads to keep the headset in place during the games. It also fits nicely on your face with adjustable depth and tightness.

Con: It does not track some of your body movements like the other two.It only tracks the controllers and the headset but it still gives you a great virtual experience

Con: The move controllers look a bit silly and do not track as good as the other ones, but they do get the job done.

PlayStation VR

HTC Vive

Pros & cons

Con: The price of the HTC Vive is $500. But that includes the light boxes and the controllers.

Con: Less comfy because the visor is huge and heavier than the others. It also has velcro straps in the back that might not be as comfy.

Pro: Tracks movement great and can sense movements and implement them into games in an amazing way making the games feel more realistic.

Pro: Controllers work amazing and have a unique design with great functionality and stellar tracking that allows for maximum play experience.

HTC Vive

Oculus Rift

Pros & cons

Con: Priced at $600 and it comes with the headset itself, 2 camera sensors, and 2 controllers.

Con: Dense foam on the front and back giving it a fluffy feel instead of just plastic. This one is also velcro so it is also not as comfy As the other ones.

Pro: Also tracks movements great but the cameras used for tracking aren’t as good as the ones on the Vive because the quality of the cameras and sensors is not as good quality and design

Con/Pro: Controllers work great as well but might feel a bit funny to some of the people laying the games because of the shape of them. This might affect play time because you might mess up due to a misclick.

Oculus Rift

And finally, the PlayStation Vr and the HTC Vive are the two best due to price, controllers, tracking, and comfort. Now the PSVR is great in price and comfort. But you won’t be the best resolution possible with that one. On the other hand, the Vive does offer some of the best quality of all but if you are willing to pay $500 for that virtual reality set, that is up to you.

If you have a very powerful PC, that is what you would need to power the Vive, and if you don’t have one a good one that can handle the Vive, are thousands of dollars. But the PSVR requires a PlayStation and if you don’t have one a PlayStation is $300.

I hope that this article will help some of you make a decision on if you want to buy a VR headset.
