Why Is Astrology Suddenly So Popular?

Lately, teens on social media have been obsessed with horoscopes and learning who they are through astrology, but many don’t know the history behind the practice. Why are so many taking an interest now?  On Instagram, Snapchat, Pinterest and other social media sites, users have been posting memes about horoscopes by making it interesting and fun.

A few examples of astrology memes found on Instagram accounts

For those who don’t already know, according to the Merriam Webster, astrology is the study of stars based on “the different positions of the sun, moon, and other planets.” Each sign has a star pattern that represents each sign. Depending on what day you were born, your zodiac has some relation to your personality. For example, if you are born between mid-May and the beginning of June, you would be a Gemini, and Geminis claim to be very easy going. As previously stated, your zodiac sign (in accordance with the planet positions) has to do with your personality traits. If you aren’t sure what qualities you may have, look at this image below.

Astrology and horoscopes were founded in the fourth century B.C. by the Babylonians and was later introduced to the Greeks. The Babylonians created astrological charts to predict seasons and celestial events. For about 2,000 years throughout the studies of Plato, Aristotle, and others, astrology was considered as science (while as for today we don’t see it as much of science anymore). The Greeks spread astrology to the Romans who divided it into twelve equal divisions, or signs such as Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces. Later on, the Romans spread it on to Middle Eastern nations, and then slowly astrology spread to the rest of the world.

Now astrology is coming back into popularity. In our generation, most kids have social media and recently people started to run astrology pages. Usually, these types of pages are popular because they combine memes with the zodiac which reels the audience in. Based on our signs, the memes tell us things like what show we should begin watching, how we react to our crush liking us, or what other signs we’d be compatible with. For example Vios Lopez, an eighth-grade student here at Dana and a Sagittarius, shares his opinion stating, “I think astrology is pretty fun because you get to explore it and it has a lot of history. Some of us don’t have friends and we try to find friends with the same zodiac or through astrology.”

Many use social media to learn more about astrological concepts

These days us millennials may be attracted to astrology because sometimes our zodiac tells us a bit more about ourselves as a person or just generally about our zodiac sign. Sophia Caserma, another eighth-grader here states, “I’ve seen posts on Instagram about the zodiac signs and I think that they are fun and interesting to learn about.” Teens find memes as a great way to get a good laugh when people mix zodiac and humor together. Therefore, we are starting to see growth in astrology due to the impact of social media today.
