Dana’s Marching Band is celebrating its 20 year anniversary this year.

Mr. Nava has directed Dana’s award-winning band since 2000. The band has traveled all around Southern California while competing in parades and performing at amusement parks. During 2020 they will be celebrating the regiments 20th anniversary.

The band is well known locally, but even outside of San Pedro. They are known for their participation in parades in surrounding cities, and for performing at amusement parks such as Six Flags, Knotts Berry Farm, and Disneyland. Sometimes the regiment is offered unique performance opportunities such as the LA Dodgers Blue Diamond Gala at Dodger Stadium. The regiment on parade routeStudents feel strongly about the sense of community the band provides. Seventh grader Nathan Deguzman says, “The band makes you feel so special, it’s like a second family for me, everyone is so nice.” They really are like a second family and if you ever need them, they always have your back. You never need to be afraid to talk to your friends in the regiment because no matter what the problem is, you always have someone to talk to. Emma Abrego, one of the auxiliary captains says, “I feel like our regiment is my second family. I go there and I have a lot of fun and laugh. I make so many memories and everybody is there for you, everybody is family.”

This upcoming year, to celebrate the huge event, the band will be competing in several more parades. This Includes marching down Main Street at Disneyland in February, competing at Six Flags in May, and a live performance at Knotts in June and several other school and community performances

Joining the regiment is so great for many opportunities. For example, attending events, parades, and getting to know new people. At the end of each year, the current 8th graders leaving the regiment pitched in the most, impacted a lot of people, and had made many accomplishments throughout the year and were awarded with a trophy. So exciting!

Mr. Nava says, “When you join activities like band you’re able to build lifelong friendships and memories that will last a lifetime. We’re just really excited to be going strong after 20 years, especially because it took several years to develop. It wasn’t just something that came overnight. It’s not just me, it took all the staff and parents, volunteers, and alumni, to get where we are now.” As many band members say, “through music, respect, humility, and honesty.” Here’s to 20 more years of an amazing band.
