As of December 8th, 2019 the CW DC shows have combined together once again to make the comic by Marv Wolfman “Crisis on Infinite Earths” possible. In this series the Monitor gathers heroes The Flash/Barry Allen (Grant Gustin), Supergirl/Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist), Green Arrow/Oliver Queen (Stephen Amill), Batwoman/Kate Kane (Ruby Rose) and many more to fend off the “Anti-Monitor”. Although, the CW has done many “Arrowverse” crossovers before. There have been five before such as Flash vs Arrow, Heroes Join Forces, Invasion!, Crisis on Earth-X, and Else Worlds.
The comic Marv Wolfman created that lasted from April 1985 to March 1986 included key elements similar to The CW’s. They managed to get the main point of the crossover but the plot was what connected all the DC shows. Before Crisis a few shows like The Flash and Arrow were tied to what was going to happen in Crisis on Infinite Earths. “When we pitched this to the studio and network, we said, ‘This is Crisis on Infinite Earths, not Crisis on CW Earths.’ We felt that to honor the original concept, we had to touch as many strands of the DC tapestry as possible.”says Marc Guggenheim, creator of Arrow. The CW tied in a lot of stuff that was respectful to Marc’s comic. Of course, the network did add in their own touch like adding Warner Brother’s Justice League The Flash (Ezra Miller) in an episode but nonetheless it served the comic’s DC crossover purpose.
When featuring DC crossovers the CW usually splits parts of it into an episode on each show that appears in the get together. Crisis on Infinite Earths had five parts. The first episode aired on Supergirl season 5 Ep. 9. In this first part the Monitor sends Harbinger to gather the worlds’ greatest heroes to stop an upcoming Crisis. The second part appearing on Batwoman season one Ep. 9 our heroes try to gather new recruits for help in saving the multiverse. The Flash season 6 Ep. 9 supplies us with its third part where they learn ways to help defeat the Anti-Monitor. Arrow season 8 Ep. 8 and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow season 5 include the last two parts and there our infamous DC heroes fight an unforgettable battle.
With the last episode airing on January 14h, 2020 The CW ends yet another DC crossover. The shows do continue after though going off of what happened after the crisis, leaving us to hope that there might be another crossover from the network. One that might honor any other crossover comics like how this season did with Wolfman’s comic. When these shows conjoin they give the audience something new or entertaining to watch. Emily Thomas an eighth grader here states, “I think that some of the crossovers are good but others can be too extra, otherwise it is pretty cool to see all these shows together.” The CW still has the last five episodes of the season so go and stream Crisis on Infinite Earths there!
