Oscar Nominations For The Best Animated Feature

Every year since 1929 the Oscars have been an annual event taking place at the Dolby Theater, CA. In 2001, they introduced a new category called “Best Animated Feature.” This year Toy Story 4 one the Best Animated Feature, but what were the movies nominated and why were they nominated?

I Lost My Body

I Lost My Body was released in 2019 but actually has no direct release date. This movie received 96% rotten tomatoes. This movie is about a hand traveling across a city looking for it’s body while telling its story through flashbacks. The hands owner, Naoufel, had big ideas for the future as a child. One day his dad got into a car crash which killed his parents but Naoufel survived. This movie was directed by Jérémy Clapin. Something interesting about this movie is that it was dubbed into English and was originally French. Also the film doesn’t have any release date that isn’t 2019. Why this movie was nominated was because it is unique and a well made story.

Missing Link

Missing Link was released on April 12, 2019. The movie got 89% rotten tomatoes from the critics. The movie is about an investigator who works to find mythical creatures whose name is Sir Lionel Frost. Lionel is trying to find a mythical creature to join a club called “the society of great men.” Lionel receives a letter which tells him of a Sasquatch, which he goes to find. Lionel travels to the Pacific Northwest, where he finds a Sasquatch and calls him Mr. Link. The movie was directed by Chris Butler. Something interesting about the film is that it was nicknamed “film 5” by the producers. The movie scored the lowest rotten tomatoes with 89%, not a low number but still did worse than the others. Why this movie was nominated was for it’s charming story and animation.

How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World

How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World was released on March 26, 2020. The movie scored 91% rotten tomatoes. The movie takes place 1 year after the events of  How To Train Your Dragon 2. It is about a person named Hiccup which has a “rare” type of dragon whose name is toothless. In this dragon utopia the amount of dragons is becoming too much for the island resulting in overpopulation. In response to this Hiccup wants to find a place called the Hidden World which is a haven for dragons. The movie was directed by Dean DeBlois. Something interesting about this movie was how it was announced 9 years before it came out. Why this movie was nominated was for it’s ending a great trilogy of movies and generally good movies.


Klaus was released on November 8, 2019. This movie received 94% rotten tomatoes. This movie is a Christmas movie about a spoiled boy named Jesper Johansson. Jesper’s dad wants his son to become a postman, but he fails horribly at it. His dad sends him to a small town named Smeerensburg with a task to deliver 6,000 letters. If Jesper fails he will be cut off from the family estate. Once Jesper gets there things go terribly with him not being able to deliver any letters. Jesper finds a small dwelling where he goes there and finds a man named Klaus, a well known toy maker. The film was directed by Serigo Pablos. The movie was released in select theaters on November 8th, 2019, and on Netflix on November 15, 2019. This movie was nominated for its beautiful animation and light hearted Christmas story with a all around great experience.

Toy Story 4

Toy Story 4 was released on June 21, 2019. The movie received 97 % rotten tomatoes. The movie takes place not too long after the ending of Toy Story 3, in which the girl who owns the toys now, Bonnie, creates a toy out of a fork named Forky. Forky becomes the most popular toy which makes Woody want to get rid of Forky at all cost and start to hate him. The movie was directed by Josh Cooley. Something interesting about this movie is that it and the previous movies were shot to act like the last movie in the Toy Story franchise but they still can have another sequel. This movie was nominated for it’s amazing story and characters.

Even though Toy Story 4 won the award, the other films nominated still deserve a watch!
