Shannen Doherty Reveals Struggle With Cancer

Shannen Doherty, known for her role as Brenda Walsh in Beverly Hills 90210, has announced that the struggle with her stage four breast cancer is getting worse. She was originally diagnosed with cancer in 2015, but earlier just this month she’s revealed that it has returned. Doherty has never been one to go public with her personal issues, but right now she wants her fans to know that this is coming from herself. Announcing it on “Good Morning America,” Doherty was very upfront about her processing all of this.

In 2015 she discovered an abnormality in her breast that doctors later confirmed to be cancerous. Now they find that her cancer has spread to the lymph nodes. She reveals that she didn’t come forth sooner to the public because of her former co-star Luke Perry’s passing. “It’s so weird for me to be diagnosed and then somebody who was, you know, seemingly healthy to go first,” says Doherty. Doherty takes all this onto social media to connect with her fans. She documents her battle there and thanks them personally. “ I want to thank all of you for your love, prayers and support. It’s an odd time right now and I find my feet not completely underneath me. To say I have stress is an understatement. To say that I’m struggling is mild. But… I believe that I will find my footing. I’ll dig deep for the inner strength I need to face it all. I pray I do it all with dignity and grace. I have so much to say. So much to share. I will. For now…please know how you all help lift me.”

Despite everything, Shannen Doherty is seemingly optimistic. She’s not letting this “issue” slow her down. In fact she tries not to think of it as a huge issue. She conserves most of this to herself and keeps her head up. In an ABC News interview she says, “ I definitely have days where I say why me. And then I go, well, why not me? Who else? Who else besides me deserves this? None of us do”. She’s making the most out of what’s happening. When she made the decision to shave her head, she posted goofy photos of her and a friend getting through it together. At this point she’s learned to love her body. “ I love that my body is strong and that it has the ability to fight something like cancer. I’m trying to show it more appreciation,” she says. Having a positive attitude even despite what her body is going through is empowering. Michella Infantozzi, an 8th grader here at Dana states, “Her attitude is really influencing because she has cancer and it shows that it doesn’t make her any weaker or stop her from doing what she loves.”

Dealing with things like mourning a friend, stage four breast cancer and insurance issues, actress Shannen Doherty is staying positive. Not many years ago you’d look at her life and you’d see a talented and successful woman. Nothing’s changed. Even with so much going on. Things may have dramatically changed for her. She may have gotten lost or given up. Despite it all, she’s here and still fighting. Her journey isn’t over and Shannen Doherty has extreme hope for her well being.
